Birmingham Town Hall and Council House/Art Gallery

Birmingham Town Hall and Council House/Art Gallery

Birmingham Town Hall, on the left, opened 1834, is a Grade I listed concert and meeting venue in Victoria Square, Birmingham 1, England.[1] It was created as a home for the Birmingham Triennial Music Festival established in 1784, the purpose of which was to raise funds for the General Hospital, after St Philip's Church (later to become a Cathedral) became too small to hold the festival, and for public meetings. Between 2002 and 2008, it was refurbished into a concert hall and is now used for performances as diverse as organ recitals, rock, pop and classical concerts and events such as graduation ceremonies for Aston University.

Birmingham City Council House in Birmingham, England is the home of Birmingham City Council. It provides office accommodation for both employed council officers, including the Chief Executive, and elected council members, plus the council chamber, Lord Mayor's Suite, committee rooms and a large and ornate banqueting suite, complete with minstrels' gallery. The first-floor's exterior balcony is used by visiting dignitaries and victorious sports teams, to address crowds assembled below.
It is located in Victoria Square in the city centre and is a Grade II* listed building. (Birmingham Town Hall is a separate building, built and used as a concert venue, and is of greater architectural significance, being listed Grade I.) The Council House has its own postcode, B1 1BB.
The side of the building, which faces Chamberlain Square, is the entrance and façade of the Museum and Art Gallery which is partly housed within the same building.

Toposcope Fort, Beacon Hill, Monument Lane, Birmingham

Toposcope Fort, Beacon Hill, Monument Lane, Birmingham

The fort dates back all the way to 1988, when it was built to house a toposcope, and celebrate 100 years of Lickey Country Park. It's quite like a toy I had as a child, which I imagined was manned by the French Foreign Legion, somewhere in the Sahara, far from Birmingham. A long way from here, geographically and climatically, on this chill and draughty January day.

Over the hill the West Midlands conurbation stretches 15 miles into the distance.

Dog walking country between Lickey and Wasely, Worcestershire

Dog walking country between Lickey and Wasely, Worcestershire

This view, seen from another toposcope on the way from Beacon Hill in Lickey to Waseley Country Park Visitor Centre, is prime dog walking country. This is not surprising given there must be at least half a million people live within 15 to 20 minutes of here.

One of my companions told me an old saying I had not heard before, as we walked along here - "When the gorse is no longer in flower sex will go out of fashion" Probably true.
