Brian Fitzpatrick - The Great Grey Owl

Brian Fitzpatrick - The Great Grey Owl

This is a Great Grey Owl or Lapland Owl (Strix nebulosa) and he can be found roaming northern hemisphere places like North America, Canada, Finland, Estonia and all across northern Asia. They will move south to hunt when food is scarce. Unfortunately like alot of large birds are considered endangered and are protected in some countries.

They do not build their own nests but will re-use those of other large birds and typically between March and May produce a clutch of four eggs on average. The eggs incubate for about 30 days and after that brooding lasts 2 – 3 weeks when the mother moves to a nearby tree or nest.

Brian Fitzpatrick - The 40 Foot

Brian Fitzpatrick - The 40 Foot

It was a cold and blustery morning with alot of cloud cover. I went out to capture a sunrise but as all Irish photographers know its a roll of the dice as the weather is so changeable. When I arrived I realised I there would be no sun but there was some light through the clouds so I attempted some long exposure shots. I had not planned on shooting the rail as its the classic Forty Foot shot but once out there I could not resist especially with so much movement in the water and the clouds.

The forty foot, which is a deep sea water inlet located between Sandycove and Bullock harbors just south of Dun Laoghaire, Ireland. Irish people have come here to swim off the coast of Dublin...

brian fitzpatrick - gary reddy

This is a shot of Gary Reddy he is a good friend of mine (former band mate). I am posting this shot because Gary is releasing his first solo album tomorrow August 19th 2011.

It a great story he was a singer/songwriter and guitarist with a number of bands throughout the years and about 18 months ago he decided it was time to take matters into his own hands and write and record his own album titled "Soliloquy". I am happy to say just purchased a copy on iTunes and its a brilliant album. Well done Gary!

The shot is one a few we took back in July. I don't regularly shoot people and think my strongest people shots are usual candid. We had a lend of a house for the day and we picked a few locations. We captured a number of images but i really liked this one. It was the end of a long day and we decided to try something a bit different.

I set up the flash and exposed the shot to allow just enough light through to catch the guitar and Garys profile. I am really happy with the shot and the negative space adds some mood to the shot. Gary was playing a really nice piece on the guitar and quickly forgot about me shooting away allowing us to create this image.

brian fitzpatrick - tangled in a web

It was only when I managed to get close enough with the macro lens I noticed his feet were tangled in a spiders web and he could not move. I captured the shot and took a few extra for good luck. I shot using aperture f7.1 to catch enough detail in his eyes and front legs allowing the wings to fall out of focus. I was amazed at the texture in his eyes.

Once I finished shooting I noticed a spider closing in. I was not sure if I should free him or let nature take its course...... follow the link to my blog to read more - bit.ly/zx4H0d

brian fitzpatrick - convention centre dublin

I will be the first to admit I like a lot of the older buildings in Dublin but over the last few years some of the more modern buildings have been stunning. I started a Modern Dublin project earlier this year and this is the second shot from that set. The first was the Grand Canal Theatre which I posted recently.

This is the Convention Centre Dublin building (or CCD building) was design by Irish born architect Kevin Roche and is a stand out building on the banks of the river Liffey in Dublin. The building has a magnificent glass atrium which is its centre piece. It was designed to be carbon neutral and environmentally sustainable. Inside there are 22 hi-tech conference rooms and......
