E.T. Rent Home!

UFO! For rent! 2br 1ba, appliances, incl. hyperdrive and gamma transmogrifier. No pets.

Rumor has it these were novelty guest houses in the UFO-crazed 1950's. When driving on highway 12 along the Outer Banks near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, you will certainly do a double-take when you see this!

Amazing. I wonder how many others are scattered around the country? I think yours has been better cared-for than mine.

I haven't a clue. A search on the 'net reveals little. Maybe there's a conspiracy to keep actual numbers quiet...

    Another sighting!

What the sign doesn't say is the other 25 apartments in the converted saucer are rented out to 6" high little green men who party all night and hold regular cow abduction classes with the smattering of crop circle tours during the weekends.

These things were made by some Swedish company and intended to be a form of durable housing that could be dropped and lived in anywhere in almost any environment. Only about 25 were made, only a few survive now. Production on them stopped when they were no longer economical to make due to the oil crisis of the 70's. Yes, plastic, which these were largely made of, is a petroleum product.

If you want to do a search for them on the net you could try "saucer houses", "UFO houses", "UFO house", etc., putting the words in quotation marks.

    Alitisa: "I want to believe..."

    Eclipse Pics: =)

katie gail: Yes. MIB will be in touch.

CSatterfield: Thanks. You giggle = my work is done.

something2do: The current tenant's lease runs out on the 15th although he may leave before then. He seems agitated and keeps mumbling about "Vogons destroying the earth to make a hyperspace bypass" or something.

    oh boy photos: Thanks.

Dugfresh: Thanks, man! Gotta get one of those. Looks like it would be nice somewhere like Montery Bay or the Bahamas or your neck of the woods. Glass-bottomed houses wouldn't be the same out in the marsh around here.

Greg-O-Ree: Making crop circles is fun - the alien equivalent of "laying rubber in front of the Dairy Queen."

KBlood: Excellent. Did I mention that you must provide your own dillithium crystals?

Golden Striker: Good info and thanks for the Googling tip.

jacqrojo: LOL - "My good looks paid for that pool and my talent filled it with water!"

    niknack: Thanks, me niether!

Well, they've done some nice landscaping since I was there, but I wouldn't rent the place unless they put up some darn curtains!

You know as a so-called conservative I would have thought that George Bush would do something about these illegal aliens!

We have gone by this "spaceship" for years when visiting between Frisco and Hatteras Village! We were down this past weekend...and we had a huge "discussion" because I wanted to stop to take a photo that captured the for rent sign (JUST as in your photo!) and he didn't! What a hysterical surprise to find your photo! :) Can't wait to show HIM that I wasn't the ONLY one! :)

  35. greenkayak73 (71 months ago | reply)

This is too funny! Great minds think alike, huh?

I took this, but I can recall at least a dozen other shots of odd buildings, people, signs and stuff, that I passed up because I didn't want to stop or because it might seem weird!

I guess the lesson is, "when in doubt or not -take the shot"!

Hope you had a great trip.

It's still for rent. I am guessing most people can't afford a proper gamma transmogrifier.

LOL - Doug! What the frack is that?
