Young Voices Essay Winner Zhang Lingling, People's Republic of China

Zhang Lingling, MPA, is a doctoral student of the Department of Population and International Health at the Harvard School of Public Health. She is a research fellow at the Global Equity Initiative in Harvard University’s Asia Center and a fellow researcher of the Harvard China Initiative and the Center for Human and Economic Development Studies (CHEDS) of Peking University. She is now working on the China Medical Board-sponsored project: 'Human Resources for Health in Rural China'. Her interest is in promoting health equity and improving the quality of care through health systems’ capacity building, especially the development of human resources for health.

Young Voices Winner Lee Yung Wong, Malaysia

Lee Yung Wong grew up in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia and is currently in his fourth year of pursuing an MBBS at the University of Melbourne, Australia. As part of a research project, he spent a few weeks undertaking a Photovoice project with World Vision Myanmar. Exposure to the perspectives of people with HIV sparked in him an interest in the health-care needs of the developing world. He treasures holistic approaches to community health and is keen to challenge mindsets towards those most in need of empowerment. Besides medical skills, he aspires to share life and hope. Lee Yung enjoys reading, music, soccer and people.

Young Voices Winner Laura Sikstrom, Canada

Laura Sikstrom is a doctoral student in medical anthropology at the University of Toronto. After a four-year hiatus she was inspired to go back to school after a 12-month internship with the Soils, Food and Healthy Communities Project in Northern Malawi. Laura is passionate about the impact of global inequities on maternal and child health. She is currently working with HIV-positive mothers to help prevent and understand the transmission of HIV from mother-to-child through breast milk.

Young Voices Winner Denise Nacif Pimenta, Brazil

Denise Nacif Pimenta is a doctoral student in Public Health at the René Rachou Research Centre – Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (CPqRR-Fiocruz), Brazil. She is an anthropologist and has been working with the social aspects of neglected diseases for about 10 years. She has an MSc in Educational Technologies for Health from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. In 2004, she was selected for a TDR/WHO Career Training Fellowship in Interactive Learning and was placed at the Wellcome Trust to work on the development of educational CD-ROMs. Since then, she has been actively building partnerships between Fiocruz and the Wellcome Trust for the development of interactive educational materials in international health.

Young Voices Winner Seye Abimbola, Nigeria

Seye Abimbola recently obtained an MBChB from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. He edited his medical school journal, IFEMED, from 2005 to 2006 and has also been international student advisor to studentBMJ since 2005. His articles have appeared in both publications and also in the BMJ. He was awarded the 2007 BMJ Clegg Scholarship. Seye has been a visiting student at the Functional Imaging Laboratory, Institute of Neurology, London and intends to do a PhD in neuroscience working with functional neuroimaging, once he is through with his work as pre-registration house officer at Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesha, Nigeria. He is deeply passionate about having research capacity boosted in developing countries.
