Streets of India - III
“In the megacities of the world, whether São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Mumbai or Calcutta, children are regularly confronted with danger in the streets. This is particularly true in the Brazilian context, where violence against children is rampant and has been highlighted in the international media.” – Citation: Chattopadhay, Tamo. “Children and Adolescents Growing Up in Poverty: Comparative Perspectives from India and Brazil - A Report from the World Social Forum 2004, India.” Children, Youth and Environments 14(1), 2004: 172-189.

beautiful shot!
this picture caught my attention the most because of the lovely layout.. especially the way the wall's shadow covering part of her face.. and the fact that she is playing with her feet.. with a certain look, looking away ..
i rarely see such a look on a child's face.. it's a look u'd expect on an older person.. MUCH older..

Even sad pictures can be favorites. They capture the dark sides of mankind and the situations we have been living with for the last 200000 thousands of years.
Children in poor conditions is definetly not a new issue, it's simply a part of natural world, but it is something we can thrive for to make things change. We can make it better!

Thanks for those inspiring comments!
India was the place and its children were the ones who made my mind up about investing in a socially responsible future. Brazil was the place that called my attention due to the killing of street children there.

so sad but such a great portrait... inbearable... when i was in India, it was absolutely impossible for me to shot those children... i admire your and Bradley's work. (sorry to "associate", but your meaning and talent are so close)

Thanks again for such inspiring comments. I think it's wonderful that we have the opportunity to share each other's work on such a high quality site like Flickr. So many great photographers among you all, each with your own special and personal touch. I think it's great to see similar situations through different eyes. We all seem to have so many different ways of observing the same topics. It was extremely kind of you Antinea, saying that about Bradley, but he really stands out in a class of his own (and thanks to his wonderful earth toned images, I managed to try something similar on some of mine from India, - although far from as good as the immaculate quality presented by Bradley).

You captured her soul so well. Her innocence and a touch of sadness. What a sweet little girl. It's heartbreaking to think of children suffering around the world. Something definitely has to be done.
May I ask how you got this earthtoned effect? It's beautiful.
carf (89 months ago | reply)
Dear HapaKorean,
If we look at all the suffering children around the world, the problem becomes just too immense for any individual to tackle. Luckily there are many of us doing a great deal to change that, but we all need to be more conscience of the fact that we and our egoistic ways are responsible in major part for most of that suffering.
I really don't know how to make those earth tones work well enough on my images to recommend my experiments to others. I was really inspired by Bradley's fantastic images with such rich earthly tones that enhanced my feelings so much towards his subject matters that I started to play around with Photo Shop to see if I could come anything close. I think I still have a lot to learn.

Yes it seems ages ago and yet the memories are so strong that it could almost have been yesterday.
I was in India in 1982, when I made use of an Olympus OM10 with various lenses, which was the first decent camera I had ever had apart from those common "snapshot" cameras. I still have it but seldem use it.
I shot about 3.000 slides in India but have never had the chance to get them scanned. This little selection were some of my favourite shots, which I had first made into negatives and then printed some copies. These scans are from the printed copies but the original slides are much, much better.
I think it was the combination of a decent camera and the wonderfully inspiring atmosphere one is constantly surrounded by in India - as you well know, that resulted in so many memorable shots. - Gregory

What innocense, such smallness, eye's that must absorb the fantastical sometime surreal world as India. where diety's are worshiped, from Rats to Ganesh the Elephant God. the Hindu pantheon is vast (is it any wondor they, the childrren can grow to accept any and every possibilty. Without questioning). I love this picture ...... Because it makes me wish to lift that child and ease her obvious concern. As any parent has experienced!
Because it can say far more than any claptrap I spout, and surely this is what photography can do better than any other medium.
