Thanks Vikram and Gaby! The problem in your stream Gaby, and in other streams, is with hackers spreading racist comments under member's identities. Probably the same people who are sending Flickr Mails trying to get members to log in to Image download packages that are merely there to capture details of personal passwords, etc.

We certainly need to become more aware of this problem and read the information being posted on the site about these negative actions affecting individuals and the community as a whole.
It is important that we first write to those who seemingly post an ugly or strange comment asking for their confirmation of it before we publicly criticize them in our streams. In most cases the person will react negatively because it seems that all of them have so far been the victims of these hackers.

Hi Yousaf,

I don't think I've been to a country where there is so much sex education in all levels of society, and I have been to very many, but we are facing a cultural problem here too.

In Brazil, though 96% of adolescents know that condom use prevents babies and HIV infection, only 60% report using them.
A macho society has many negative consequences for the girls.
Girls are often seen as less important to family and community life than boys. Girls are not as much encouraged as boys to further their studies and develop their careers. Millions of girls are raised in an environment of neglect, overwork and often abuse, simply because they are female. In such an environment, it is almost impossible for girls to develop physically, mentally and socially to their fullest potential.

thanks for posting and especially the commentary... I think until a critical mass of men take up the cause of equality the problem will continue to exist. the sad thing is, the whole world would benefit so much if girls were encouraged in education (mentally and socially as you put it). We don't know the great impact it would have if the majority of the worlds' female population were highly educated. who knows, maybe less wars? maybe more compassion for the poor and for children? for nature? Lots to think about...

Eu penso que em primeiro lugar devemos mudar a educação das mulheres nas escolas e em suas casas, para atingir uma modificação na forma da MÃE ensinar suas FILHAS. Pois vejo que numa sociedade machista o problema não está na educação dos homens, mas sim na educação das mulheres que no futuro educarão seus filhos HOMENS. Se toda violência que testemunhamos hoje sobre a forma de MACHISMO, vem de pessoas que na maioria são criadas por MULHERES, então temos algo de estranho nisto tudo. Meu senso comum me diz que isto ocorre menos em crianças educadas por pais (homens) exclusivamente.
Meninas criadas por HOMENS tem o amadurecimento sexual atrasado por 3 anos em média, é o que consta numa pesquisa divulgada recentemente (BBC). Minha experiência de vida também constatou isto, pois sou pai de uma menina e a educo deste que ela nasceu. Quando a mãe impõe limites sobre os filhos, não sei dizer o porquê, funciona mais como repressão do que uma educação. Temos então uma pesquisa mais profunda que se já não já foi feita, pode ser iniciada.

Quatro traficantes abriram fogo contra alunos numa suposta retaliação a uma expulsão da Favela do Sapo. Pelo menos cinco ficaram feridos.
Camila não esconde o receio de não contar mais com Thiago para cuidar do filho, que deverá nascer no dia 2 de abril no Hospital Geral de Bonsucesso. O bebê se chamaria Gabriel, mas Camila decidiu batizá-lo com o nome do pai. Na quarta-feira, Camila passou por mais uma consulta médica de rotina do pré-natal. Ela e o bebê estão bem. No lugar do namorado, foi o pai dele, Fernando Paulino, o último a falar com Thiago , de 42 anos, quem a acompanhou.
Medo no colégio
Um clima de medo ainda domina o Colégio Estadual Abraão Jabour. As aulas do período da noite foram suspensas. Os alunos que estiveram na escola foram recebidos pela diretora em um auditório, onde houve uma conversa sobre o ataque e a violência da região. Já as aulas dos períodos da manhã e da tarde transcorreram normalmente. Policiais militares estiveram na unidade. Os professores pediam, insistentemente, para que os alunos não ficassem do lado de fora.

thanks for answering .. I always felt sorry for such women/girls those are given no status in society. The organisation are there to help but without GOV support it is really hard for them to over come the situation 100%.

I am happy that you are working hard to bring those issue and educating people. I wish every man think like this.

The photos in this series are merely illustrative for some of of the problems we face with our young people and are not specific for the specific children in portrait, thus Sabrina is gladly not one of those victims and hopefully our work will prevent her from becoming one.

But there are many like her who have to face this reality at such an early stage in life; 32.000 girls under the age of 14 with unwanted pregnancies in Brazil each year.........
