Jenny Lake "HDR MAX"

Trust me, you want to view this one large on black.

This was the first morning I went out to catch first light looking over Jenny Lake. The lake was still as glass that morning and I was initially disappointed because sunrise came and went and the damned clouds were in the way. But as soon as those stripes of warm sunlight hit the peaks I realized I was a fool and quite lucky to boot!

I know - another panorama and another HDR MAX image. Clearly, I'm hooked. Like the Bad Lands pano, this one just has too much information - even viewed large on black there is so much more detail to be seen. Ultimately I'm a geek and I love technology. I love being able to push as many pixels as I can with all the detail I can capture through PS. I'm not much of an artist - an artist would take a much better photograph of the same scene - in fact if you search "Jenny Lake" in flickr you can probably find a few hundred better images. I love this one because the details make the photo for me - I can pan through this image over and over again at full resolution. Check out the 50% crops I posted below.

So why do I bother making these images? You'll think I'm silly, but when I was a kid I thought my computer's VGA monitor was pretty slick - after all Mac's had a black and white monitor at the time. Next came XGA and that was even better. Now I have a laptop with an SXGA+. Sometime in the future I will likely have something like QSXGA (2560x2048) - and then who knows what.

One of these days, when I find the right subject I'm going to make a gigapixel photograph. I guess it just makes me feel like a large-format photographer without having to bother with film.

Why HDR then? Well - this image was processed using the new HDR MAX program, available from www.ariea.com. They are running a photo contest to promote the program - the first prize is a 15" MacBook Pro. Details here.

I'm a total HDR apologist - I'm sure I'll rant sometime about how great it is. I'm also totally humorless about shooting RAW - if you see Ken Rockwell tell him this was shot RAW ... uncompressed - enjoy the crops below.
