This can't be from 1896. I know automotive history and this kind of vehicle simply didn't exist until around 1917 or so. Additionally, there are other cars in the background. In 1896 only a few daring experimenters and enthusiasts owned cars, mostly steam or electric. (this car has a front crank, meaning that it was gasoline powered).
Here, there's a typical mix of horse carriages and cars common to the 1910 - 1920 decade. Somewhere along the line somebody mislabled the original date of this photo. It's a very cool photo, by the way!

Hello wavz13! Thanks for the insight into this photo. As I look at the picture and read your note, I know you are right. Even the clothing on the passengers points to the Edwardian era around World War I. I've changed the caption. Thanks again!
