NASA image captured March 19, 2011
SDO captured this nicely rounded prominence eruption from March 19, 2011 as a prominence became unstable and erupted into space with a distinct twisting motion. The movie, seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/gsfc/5558502559/ shows a tight close-up of the action in extreme ultraviolet light over about a five-hour period. Prominences are elongated clouds of plasma that hover above the Sun's surface, tethered by magnetic forces.
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center enables NASA’s mission through four scientific endeavors: Earth Science, Heliophysics, Solar System Exploration, and Astrophysics. Goddard plays a leading role in NASA’s accomplishments by contributing compelling scientific knowledge to advance the Agency’s mission.
