Judge magazine 1927

This was Enoch's last cover for Judge, the magazine that launched his career. A few months later they would hire a new staff artist, Theodore Geisel. After a few months he started signing his cartoons as Dr. Seuss. As far as I know they never met.

Wow--thanks for that info--I would never have guessed Geisel was a Judge artist. I saw a vintage short on him as Geisel--and his wacky characters--these were 3 D creatures.

How did he get the Dr.?

Yes, Judge really got him his start as an illustrator If you are interested in some extra details, check out the story on my blog:
enochbolles.blogspot.com/2009/03/today-is-dr- seusss-birth... You'll get a kick from how he was "paid."
A lot of his Judge work was adult oriented, even risque'. Have you seen his WW-II cartoons? There's a lot of rather crude racial stereotyping going on in them, though at the time his depictions were pretty standard.
Here's a great site that has tons of examples:

As far as the Dr. Seuss added it as sort of a joke referring to the doctorate he never got while he was overseas studying art (informally).

Beautiful pic. I'm going to use it to illustrate good posture in this article chrishugh.blogspot.com/2010/09/article-improv e-your-postu.... Your Creative Commons designation seems to say that's okay, but if I'm wrong and you decide you want me to take down the photograph (I hope you don't!!), just mention that in the comment and I'll take it down.
