Worth viewing on black I think.
A bit of a Peter Lik style title I know, but maybe it deserves it as it was pretty extreme :)
This was from a photographic session that was the best part of the trip for me. Accompanied by three top notch Photographers at this stage in the shape of Peter Spencer www.flickr.com/photos/35972709@N03/, Antony Spencer www.flickr.com/photos/antonyspencer/ and Andy Farrer www.flickr.com/photos/andyfarrer/, I was in good company. We had a blast as some of the most dynamic Aurora of the trip flashed across the sky in this spectacular location in the frozen Swedish forests. As much s I love the coast, these forests were something special and twinned with such an otherworldly event made them memorable for a life time.
Although there are a couple of technical issues with this shot, mainly
a 'soft' fg due to a wide aperture, I still feel it has the emotional
effect I was looking for. I would love to have a had a pin sharp image
throughout, but shooting in these conditions challenged everything you
could imagine. Just thinking straight at these temperatures was hard
enough. -35 degrees c really does make the skull numb. Lots of winter
clothing including 5 pairs of trousers and two pairs of gloves, a
frozen tripod, frosted up glasses, super slow camera reactions and the
tiredness of hours of traveling make for a tough but enjoyable shoot.
The Aurora moves so fast sometimes, like here, that composition
becomes really challenging too. Switching between different apertures
and iso's and almost becoming overwhelmed by the sheer scale of it all
makes shooting the Aurora like this far more than just 'documenting'
as some would lead to believe. A trip I would love to repeat again
sometime and won't forget in a hurry. I have a few more traditional
landscape shots that will be posted in due course, but I needed to get
this one out of the system :)
Thanks for looking and all the kind feedback to date.
