GENERAL EMILIO AGUINALDO as a YOUNG MAN

I made a Google search for this old halftone image in my collection. I couldn't find it even after a long scroll, so am posting it here to add to the visual record of this amazing and controversial "Father of the Philippine Republic".

".......General Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy (March 22, 1869 – February 6, 1964) was a Filipino general, politician, and independence leader. He played an instrumental role in Philippine independence during the Philippine Revolution against Spain and the Philippine-American War that resisted American occupation. He eventually pledged his allegiance to the US government.

In the Philippines, Aguinaldo is considered to be the country's first and the youngest Philippine President, though his government failed to obtain any foreign recognition...."

His life was packed with adventure, intrigue, and pioneering politics --- far more than the above quote indicates. Get a better idea of his life and times at the Wiki link below :

AMERICANS ON THE SIDE OF THE PHILIPPINES

Author Mark Twain was perhaps the most famous American to lobby loud and clear for America's immediate exit from the Philippines, to be replaced with a repesct for their independence and soverignty. However, there were others like him in high positions who battled in vain against the American polictical corruption of the time. Williams Jennings Bryan was one whose heart was 100% on the side of the Filipino.

The above photo was obtained in the Philippines by Bryan, and used in his 1907 book THE OLD WORLD AND ITS WAYS. In this book, he argued eloquently for the cessation of America's occupation of the Philippines, and for the Filipinos right to run their own country without America breathing down their neck. In other words, Bryan thought that America should be a helpful friend and ally of the Philippines, not an imperial occupier.

He had been a strong supporter of the Spanish-American War (which got Spain out of the Philippines), but was dead-set against the USA replacing Spain as ruler of the Philippines.

"......Bryan gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention in 1900 called "The Paralyzing Influence of Imperialism". In this speech he discusses his views against the annexation of the Philippines, questioning the United States's right to overpower people of another country just for a military base......."
