SHOW ME THE OBI ! + THE SEVEN LUCKY HAIRSTYLES of OLD JAPAN (日本髪)
Flicker voyeur KUMIYANAGI identified four of the old hairstyles found in this flickr pic : www.flickr.com/photos/24443965@N08/2338653640/in/set-7215...
Here we have seven different NIHON GAMI styles from the Meiji-era to contend with !
Still, KUMIYANAGI (flickr's own roving "Nihon Gami Sensei") comes to the rescue once again in comment # 3 below.
This photo is proof that, although Japanese women's hairstyles "all look the same", upon closer inspection, the truth is otherwise. They are only the same in the sense that they "all have their hair up".
I wonder how many modern day hairstylists in Japan are classically trained to make these for Geisha and Movie Stars who don't wear wigs ?
NOTE : Today, there is at least ONE blabber-mouth down in the GION District of KYOTO that has a lot of secretive Geisha pissed off :
In any case, a very unusual large albumen photo from the 1880s-90s.
