PILGRIM ON A FOREST ROAD -- Into the Mist of Old Japan
This is one of a series of FOUR PHOTOS taken by Enami only minutes apart along the same trail in the misty mountains of old Japan.
Enami published a mini-series of four different consecutive views with this title, all showing the same guy at different points along this misty trail. They are ENAMI 3-D CATALOG numbers S 896 through S 899.
Three of the four images in this series can be seen HERE : ♥ www.flickr.com/search/?q=%22Traveler+in+the+Morning+Fog%2...
Follow the links given in the in-photo notes, and you will experience a bit of the movement and thoughts going on in Enami's head as he considers which way to artistically compose each shot.
I have posted two others as Enami's own lantern-slide conversions, but have yet to find the fourth and final view. See them HERE :
One of the three posted images is a STEROVIEW, the beauty of which is further enhanced by the depth of the scene, preserved by the twin lenses of the stereo camera.
The above images was in a box of old T. ENAMI lantern-slides that were on a top shelf in my bedroom
GETTING IT FROM THE BOX TO FLICKr : I put it on a piece of cheap plastic with a fluorescent light behind it, then I shot it with a hand-held LUMIX digital camera. The "auto white balance" committed suicide, and left me with this color --- even the AUTO COLOR CORRECTION button of PICASA decided to leave it this way.
I'm sure Enami would have approved ! (???)
The BIG TREE to the right of the man is the same one seen just down the trail in a "BLUE" VARIANT VERSION -- probably taken only a few minutes prior to the above "YELLOW" variant :
So, what do you prefer.... the Blue Mist...or this "arty" Yellow Mist?
After over 24,000 views, the above "Yellow Version" gets the votes of most flickr members, leaving its blue-variant "sister version" in the dust --- er, the MIST --- with only 15,000+ views !!!
Strangely, the lesser-viewed "Blue Version" is in more flickr Galleries.
CHECK OUT THIS FINE CONVERSION INTO A BEAUTIFUL WORK OF ART :
If you like these kind of shots, you can see more of them in my flickr SET of "MIST, HAZE, and FOG in OLD JAPAN".
Photographed ca.1898-1908 by T. ENAMI, Japan's Meiji-era Master of the small-format image. The particular slide above was printed later in Enami's studio, ca.1925-30 from the earlier image. www.t-enami.org/
