CAMPFIRE BOYS - High in the Mountains of Old Japan
CATALOG TITLE : Those who climb Mt. Fuji make a fire on the way to get warm.
PRINTED TITLE ON VIEW : [ ??? ]...on the peak of Mt. Myoji, Nakasendo.
The discrepancy between the catalog title and that on the mount is not unusual. Long titles were often edited down, or re-written altogether. Enami's elder competitor, K. KIMBEI was also famous for numerous variations between catalog and in-photo captions.
COLORING A CAMPFIRE
Enami hauled his 3-D camera all over the place, and loved getting off the beaten tracks. Here, he comes across two mountain men in a rustic setting, and gets an unusual shot.
Keep in mind that you are really looking at an old B/W image that has been hand-tinted in a time-consuming process by colorists working with brushes as thin as a single hair.
The swirling smoke takes on translucent depth in 3-D, and the attempt to approximate the glowing fire is pretty good. From the green moss on the rocks to the distant blue mountain through the trees, nothing is missed. The original tinted silver print image is still vibrant after 110 years.
