Preservation in Your Community 2009
The National Center for Preservation Technology and Training, Cane River National Heritage Area, and Cane River Creole National Historic Park showcased research at the 9th annual Preservation in Your Community (PIYC) on Aug. 11, 2009. Presentations included the reproduction of floor coverings and window treatments for the Oakland Plantation Main House Exhibit, the Magnolia Plantation Blacksmith’s Shop Collection, and the conservation treatment strategies at the park’s curation facility. Presentations also included a hand-held computer application for historic landscapes, a study on the effects of pollution on cultural resources, a study on the consolidation of archeological bone and bone strengthening, and a technique using microwave radiation to remove unwanted biological growth on masonry. The National Park Service’s National Center for Preservation Technology and Training protects America’s historic legacy by equipping professionals in the field of preservation with progressive technology-based research and training. Since its founding in 1994, NCPTT has awarded over $7 million in grants for research that fulfills its mission of advancing the use of science and technology in the field of historic preservation. Working in the fields of archeology, architecture, landscape architecture and materials conservation, the Center accomplishes its mission through training, education, research, technology transfer and partnerships.
