France
Tank, Char 1935 S Somua
Initial Production: 1935
Weight: 22.1 tons
Crew: 3
The Somua was the first tank produced with an all-cast-hull. Four hundred were available to the French Army in 1940. After the fall of France the Germans used these tanks to train tank crews in operation in secondary theaters, and for fighting partisans. More than a match for German tanks during the Battle of France in 1940, it was well armed, had good mobility but was limited by the commander’s responsibilities. He had to load, aim, and fire the gun as well as command the crew which consisted of a driver and radio operator.
