The Pencil Factory, Keswick.

The Pencil Factory, Keswick.

No visit to Keswick would be complete without a visit to the Cumberland Pencil Factory Museum. It's a great place to spend an hour or so if the weather's not so good. You can see the world's largest pencil and spy pencils used during the war with hidden silk maps and compasses, etc. They were also supplied to air crew.

Westmoreland Cairn, Great Gable.

Westmoreland Cairn, Great Gable.

This cairn was built on the summit of Great Gable, overlooking Wasdale Head and Wast Water, by the Westmoreland brothers. It's a great spot for some brilliant mountain scenery. You're spoiled for choice in the Lake District.

The Shepherds' Monument.

The Shepherds' Monument.

If you're going to climb up Skiddaw from Keswick you pass this Shepherds' Monument as
you head for Jenkins Hill. It's a really impressive Celtic cross.

Here's a nice description of the route from Keswick to Skiddaw passing the monument:

View from the Catbells.

View from the Catbells.

The Catbells is a beginner's hill on the shore of Lake Derwentwater. What it lacks in height it more than makes up for in views. On a good day you have this impressive panorama of Lake Derwentwater, Keswick, Skiddaw, Blencathra and so much more. On a trip to Keswick it's nice to take the ferry across the lake to Hawse End and amble up the slopes. You can see the straight lines that the sheep travel along. No twists and turns for them.
