Hawaiian Exclusive...

EXPLORE: January 25, 2012
We had a great time photographing the elusive Hawaiian I'iwi Honeycreeper. The hot spot on Maui is Hosmer Grove in Haleakala National Park. They are found at higher elevations (above 4,000 feet) and are one of Hawaii's remaining native species. Hawaii is the only place in the world where these beauties reside. Managed to catch this one feeding on the nector in these beautiful flowers.

I'iwi feed on insects but depend more on nectar for sustenance. Their long, decurved beak can reach the nectar stored in deep-throated flowers. 'I'iwi feathers were used in ancient Hawaiian feather work for the Hawaiian royalty, or ali'i.

We discovered this photo on the road to Hana. Maui is full of surprises. The wave action along with the colors and contrast on this small home created a good opportunity. The lava rock is everywhere which always adds to the contrast and beauty of the area.

Look at Me...

Look at Me...

The males were doing tail slaps to attract the ladies. We had one Humback do as many as 15 consecutive slaps. They seemed to last forever. Not certain how effective they were though. Most were traveling in competition pods. This pod consisted of five whales. It was a great day for whale watching. Maui is truly one of the best Humpback Whale watching spots in the world.

Amazing...

Amazing...

EXPLORE: January 20, 2012
The Humpback Whales are back in Hawaii. They congregate around Maui because of the perfect water conditions. They do not eat much for the three months they are there. Instead of dining they spend most of their time looking for a mate and producing young whales. This one was moving about with her calf at her side. It is so special when one can catch them in a breach. I felt very fortunate indeed. These amazing creatures of the deep will start working their way back to Alaska with their young and a gigantic appetite in April. This photo was taken off a Pacific Whale Foundation tour boat.

Aloha...

Aloha...

We just got back from Maui today. It was a long flight but well worth it. The sunsets were amazing along with the beautiful flowers and of course the Humpback Whales. More are arriving in the waters around Maui each day after their long journey from Alaska. Hope to post a few more photos from this beautiful island in the days to come.
