Beware of the Horses

Beware of the Horses

Beautiful creatures, aren't they? They tried to kill my girl, Jill, my sweet cocker spaniel.
We went my sister's farm in South Carolina over the holidays, where a neighbor recently started using her pasture for his horses.
One day we took her 3 dogs (2 german shepards and a mix) and my 2 cocker spaniels on a walk in her woods as we normally do. This time when we exited the woods into the pasture, we heard Todd coming on the ATV on the opposite side of the horses. My sister's two german shepards went out to the horses, and my two dogs ventured out into the pasture, with my girl, Jill, being a little to curious and ignored my calls to come back, got too close to the horses. These horses are a bit energetic. My sister says they are nice and will come right up to you. But this day, maybe the number of dogs or something, sent them charging towards Jill, stomping their hoofs as they ran. Jill ran away from them as fast as she could go, but the horses were faster and the first one caught up to her, lifted it's hoof and smacked down on Jill's back in mid stride. Jill tumbled to the ground, got back up tried to escape but the other horses were surrounding her and trying to stomp her. Todd came around the horses, spotted me at the edge of the woods and was heading to me on his ATV. He saw the panic on my face and saw me point, but could not hear me yelling " Go Back! They are trying to hurt her!" He turned to see what was going on, turned the ATV and went flying into the herd of horses sending them scattering enough for Jill to escape and run back to me. Daddy the Hero!
I was terrified that the horses had hurt her, but she showed no signs of injury, only fear.
Todd came back on the ATV and took Jill, while I put my other cocker spaniel, Jake, on a leash to keep him from going towards the horses.
Todd had to keep the ATV between us with the dogs on the edge of the woods, and the horses. The horses kept coming towards us to try to stomp the dogs. Todd ended up getting kicked when he tried to cut off one horse that was trying to get to Jake. Todd got a nasty scrape and bruise, and a broken fender on his ATV. Todd had to escort us all the way to the gate near the house.
Jill snuggled on Todd's lap for the rest of the evening.
