Life on Mars!

Life on Mars!

Ok so this wasn't taken on Mars, but it was so cold here it felt like Mars! I stood quite a way in the water to get this shot but didn't want to go too far as the water was a bit choppy to say the least! New learning curve with this UWA lens though... Position tripod so that it isn't in the bloody shot! The sun came out for this shot which created some pretty cool shadows on the pebbles in the foreground. I don't really like the groyne post though as it's too distorted; had to work with what I had though and the tide was getting further and further out and the closer I got to it, the more distorted it became! Definitely learned a few lessons on this trip.

Anyone for Lobster?

Anyone for Lobster?

Took a trip down to Whitstable today and while my girlfriend was searching high and low for a vintage Agatha Christie book in the local book shops, I too the opportunity to get out with the camera. It was exceptionally windy today and learning my lesson from my last epic fail, I kept a very watchful eye on my equipment and luckily, I had no such problems this time.

While walking along the beach I spotted a couple of dead lobsters which I thought would make great subjects. I planted this one against the backdrop of the sea and had a play around with it. I'm still very much learning composition basics with this UWA lens and I must have been literally inches away from this lobster, it's ridiculously wide! In hindsight, I wish I had got the camera lower and moved closer to the water, the tide was going out so I had to keep chasing it to get the shot I wanted! I also wished I had moved closer to the groyn on the left for some lead ins. Ah well, there's always next time!

Epiphany

Epiphany

After reading hundreds of articles and studying hundreds of other peoples light painted images, I went to bed last night and dreamed about light painting! If that isn't committed, I don't know what is... In my dream I was able to manipulate the light to do what I wanted it to do by either speeding up or slowing down, focusing the light or blanketing and when I woke up I suddenly realised what I had to do. I couldn't wait to get out this evening to test the theory, especially after finally receiving the new Canon 10-22mm in the post, it's a cracking lens; I've not had much chance to play with it yet but I love it already. Anyway, this is the result of my epiphany following that dream. I took around 15-20 shots to get the lighting that I needed and then spent around an hour cobbling each of the frames together in photoshop to get the result I have been trying to get for a very long time now. If I am critical, it's still not perfect, but I feel that I have at least crossed a bridge and it's just a matter of perfecting the technique now, oh and finding better locations, this road sucked but at least it was dark I guess!

Midnight Purple

Midnight Purple

First of all Happy New Year everyone! This is another shot of the BMW 1 series light painted to kick the year off. I hadn't bothered cleaning the car and if you look closely you can see the diesel stain from the filler and also the tar and mud splashes on the skirts which I think adds some interest. I bought a new torch which is pocket sized and is just a single LED. The spread of the light is very fine and is good for making a pin stripe which I experimented with a little after producing this image. I daresay I'll be revisiting this in the near future as the technique is actually quite difficult to get just right. This image has had quite alot of post processing work done to it consisting of tone overlays, tints to the windows, some masking etc in photoshop and has completely transformed the original in honesty, but I like the outcome. I'm really looking forward to giving the flash gun a go as soon as I can get my hands on some radio triggers although I kinda need to get used to off camera lighting and been reading about it so much that I tend to (in my mind) reverse engineer how an image has been lit from bloody adverts on the tele to book covers etc... I think it's going to be an interesting year with much to learn!

Seeing Red II

Seeing Red II

As suggested by one of my Flickr contacts Peter, I cropped the original image 'Seeing Red' taken at Reculver on Wednesday so that it shows only the groyne post. I really liked the simplicity of this crop so I had to post it up. Incidentally this will also be my last post this year... Lots to look forward to next year though with the olympics and the end of the world (should be plenty of photo oportunities with that one)! In the meantime however, I wish everyone a happy new year!
