Common Whitethroat

Its not very often you can get close to these little birds. I am pleased with this shot.

Brown Argus

Brown Argus

This is the same butterfly as my previous photo. I still find it difficult to see the difference between a brown argus and a female common blue but from comments made last year about the single dark marks on the forewings and also the pattern around the orange markings, I'm going with brown argus. I'll have to to look at my field guides again!

Brown Argus

Brown Argus

Lots of brown argus around at the moment. This was one of 14 species I saw at RSPB The Lodge at the weekend.

Hitchin Lavender

Hitchin Lavender

This is the lavender fields at Hitchin Lavender looking from the bottom left corner of the field. As you can see, the foreground lavender is out but the lavender behind it is still about a week behind. Lots of bees but not many butterflies compared to last year.

Marbled White

Marbled White

This was my first marbled white for the year, taken a few weeks ago. Now there are loads. It is a great wildlife site for butterflies with at least 17 of the 34 hertfordshire species seen this year including essex skipper, purple hairstreak and also white letter hairstreak, Also very good for skylarks.
