Sunset Rays- Emerald Isle, NC (3-4-12)

Sunset Rays- Emerald Isle, NC (3-4-12)

On Sunday night, we closed out our second workshop on Emerald Isle with a great sunset shoot. Although brief, the rays that burst through the two levels of clouds were astonishing. One of those rare sunsets where everything- light, foreground and clouds - comes together.

Neuse River, Where's the Water?

Neuse River, Where's the Water?

It's impossible to take a self portrait and not feel awkward as you do it. I did it anyway, more so that I could give a sense of scale than to take a picture of myself! This is the east bank of the Neuse River. Recent high winds have pushed a whole lot of water out of the river and into the sound leaving this. I hiked far off shore to this spot and as you can see, there is a lot more space left. This also goes to show just how shallow the river is when it is full of water. There can't be more than a foot or two of water here at full capacity, even though it is a good 250 feet from the shore.

The wind blowing across the river was unreal. It was literally roaring and there were some wild waves on the choppy water. Just a really cool day to be out there!

Leap Year Sunset | New Bern, NC

Leap Year Sunset | New Bern, NC

This evening, an hour before the sun was to set, I noticed the sun was briefly shining. Seeing the grey clouds briefly part made me thing there may be something to tonight's sunset. I was sure it would either be amazing or be blah. Either way, I have learned not to risk such things. So, much to my wife's dismay, I headed out to shoot a sunset just before dinner. The sky went through many different colors as the clouds and sun played off one another until, after setting, this happened. Sunsets like these come around about as often as a leap year, that's for sure.

There is a section of the Neuse River in New Bern, NC that is littered with what is left of wharves, piers and pylons from industry and commerce along the river banks in the past. Standing behind them is a train drawbridge spanning the river and connecting to Bridgeton.

Life In Motion

Life In Motion

I really like the two types of motion captured in this 30-second exposure. The motion of Mother Nature in the moving clouds contrasts with the motion of man in the cars and trucks zooming on and off the ramps to the highway in a way that makes for a very interesting scene. Something you can only really notice in a long exposure photograph. I think that's what really draws me to long exposure work, being able to see what you normally would not notice.
