Looking south - Veterans Memorial Garden - Balboa Park - San Diego California
Looking south from the northern portion of the one-acre Veterans Memorial Garden in Balboa Park in San Diego, California.
San Diegans set aside the land that would become Balboa Park as a "reserve" in 1835. The park itself was created in 1872.
In 1919, the city deeded over a 40-acre portion of the park's western side to the U.S. Navy for construction of a naval hospital. The Navy constructed a new hospital adjacent to this land in 1983, and in a land swap returned the Balboa Park land to the city.
The city tore down all but four of the 42 old Naval Hospital buildings. Veterans Memorial Garden was dedicated on November 11, 2005.
