Mosaic Gazing Ball

    Newer Older

I made this gazing ball for someone who had a mosaic bench with a mermaid on it. She wanted something to compliment it. THis was my last gazing ball ever to sell. One of the balls cracked right open from the inside out. Not going to mess with that again !

I like that! It's weird that some crack open like that. We tried to drill through a few for a mosaic fountain, and was never able to get
all the way through them, yet some crack like that. Hope this one holds up! It's really a great piece!

Funny that you should all say that because this is the one that cracked and it was a pain to do over. That is why in my book they are officially retired !

Wow I hadn't heard that they crack and I wanted to do one.
was it a bowling ball or foam?

It was a bowling ball. From talking to people I have learned not to use the older ones.(which is kind of difficult since they are the easier and cheaper ones to get). There is a better chance of having a hairline fracture. So after dissecting the whole thing I could only think that somehow- even after sealing that some type of moisture got in and it expanded from within. Either that or the crazy weather that we had last summer. All though I forgot and have left mine out all winter.

Love this gazing ball. The colours and especially the design! Can't believe it cracked!!! That's a serious sucky thing to happen!!! It sounds like you fixed it though?! How did you manage that? I think I woulda picked it up and smashed it some more, lol!!!

Kimbo I THe only way of fixing the problem was to make a whole new one. Anyone who has made these know the time that goes into them So they are off of my list of things to do ! Makes me worried about the others that sold or was it just a freak thing ?

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Bowling Ball Art, and we'd love to have this added to the group!

Now- as to the crackin thing...hmmmm. I have done quite a few. I do not leave out in the weather and bring them in in the winter. In the summer- they are protected from the sun. That's about it....I had numerous ones in my yard for years- 5-7. Then- all of a sudden half of them self destructed.....not sure why.

There are lots of tutorials on doing the foam gazing balls...I am going to try them- just for the weight thing if nothing else...

This is a very pretty piece. Soryy it was trouble for you. I will flip if mine decompose......Oh well. Check out the bowling ball group- I would love for you to add your piece.
