My brother and I camped South of The Racetrack on New Year's Eve so we could be there for sunrise. It was really, really cold. It was also a great way to start the new year.

I see that I used the wrong watermark. Oh well, I guess this is the high tech version of writing the wrong year on things for a few weeks.

I found this area to be very difficult to get good pictures of. These salt outcrops (growths?) go on for a very long way, but they are only photogenic when the light rakes across at just the right angle. The patterns are dull if the light is too low, and the contrast is too much if the sun gets much higher. This is the only shot that I got that was even remotely appealing.

Still, I would strongly suggest that you go check this out if you are in Death Valley. It is tough to walk through, but interesting shapes can be found all around.

Just don't fall down.

These clay-like dunes were harder to climb up than they look like they should be. The soil is very loose. Of course, it probably didn't help that I chose one of the most difficult routes to this vantage. We left our gear down below, and I had to wander around looking for a safer way down. We ended up having to hike down to the main trail, and then go up the trail again to get back to our gear.

This is a trail leading from the Zabriske Point overlook toward Manly Beacon.

This is somewhere South of Highway 90 in Death Valley National Park.
