During my recent trip to Whitley Bay I made a stop at Blyth Quay. Met a really nice old chap there who recounted for me the history of the quay and the coal industry of the area from about the 1960s. Really fascinating opportunity to learn about the area while I snapped away at the wonderful colors dancing around on the surface of the water. This one looks far more like a painting to my eye. Another example where a telephoto lens is a nice piece of kit to have in the bag :)

Strid Wood Winter II

Strid Wood Winter II

Well, it looks like our latest snowfall a couple weeks back is probably going to prove to be the last of the winter precipitation this year. For me that means we can bring on Spring anytime then. Actually, the outlook is not good for the water table this summer and weather experts are predicting droughts here in the UK as bad as anything we've seen in the past several decades. Its all down to back to back dry winters and reservoirs are already way below normal. It'd take a month or two of continual rain to make up for the shortage.

This is one from a few weeks back made over in Strid Wood. Pretty straight forward extraction of elegant detail amidst the snow-covered branches along the trail. This is another one of those examples of imagery I enjoy making using a telephoto lens. I did a short writeup of my thoughts on using telephoto lenses for landscape photography on a blog I've started on my website. The blog is a New Year's resolution that I'm going to try to keep at throughout the year. If it ends up sucking or I just can't keep up with it then I'll drop the notion. Not being much of a writer really I've decided to start with some basic topics and will then move into more difficult and personal subjects over time (hopefully).

Cheers!

Ladybird, Ladybird

Ladybird, Ladybird

I was first drawn to the pattern of the snow clinging to this birch tree in Strid Wood. I fine tuned the composition and exposure for several minutes before I actually noticed the tiny insect taking refuge from the cold. View large and hit F11 to see things more clearly.

Cheers!

Untrodden Ground

Untrodden Ground

Sunrise over High Crag Ridge on the high ground above Glasshouses in Nidderdale. I was drawn to the relationship between the warm and cold tones and the pristine covering of snow on the trail leading around the top of this ridge.

Cheers!

River Wharfe Abstract III

River Wharfe Abstract III

Going from monochromatic quiet to "what the heck was he thinking" abstract color. This is a close up of water action on the River Wharfe. Believe it or not this one is straight out of the camera and I actually desaturated it slightly. The only additional post-processing entailed healing out two specks of sensor dust and application of a slight curves adjustment (luminousity blending mode). View large to fully appreciate the detail in the splashing water.

Cheers!
