Bucket Brigade

    Newer Older

Aren't you glad that modern fire departments have ladder trucks and pumpers and hydrants and hoses? No wonder so many great cities burned to the ground throughout history.

This is a fire truck ca ~1850's in the San Juan Bautista Historical Park adjacent to the mission.

Robin noted below that they're round-bottomed which I hadn't noticed; I found the following interesting factoid on a wikipedia site:
"The fire buckets are usually made round bottom so that they cannot be used for other purposes."

So I guess no one would want to steal them to make a flower pot or use them around the farm.... they're designed to be hung from a hook and not useful for any other purpose.

      Nice composition and color!

And yes, I'll take modern firefighting any day. I can't imagine they could have thrown a full bucket of water or sand very far.
