This is great. It has a sense of soul about it, with the graininess and the movement and the negative space. Although he was a sax player, the mood led me straight to Art Pepper ...

Thanks, Ken. I really like this picture, am very happy with it. (Connects also with my remembering sitting there listening to them... in a tiny [handful of people] venue). Makes me most happy that you 'got it' as well !
I know of Art Pepper, but dont have anything by him, amongst the small collection of jazz stuff I have.

Really interesting. Amazeing to crop out the face above the point of contact between the instrument nand the mouth concentrates on the music. Has intense mood and works really well.

I have lots of musician friends and generally find it very challenging to photograph performances, capturing the dynamics and mood in the inevitable low light.

I think this has real atmosphere - it would make an excellent album cover or book jacket I think...

Thanks Andy and Gary, so much.
In this case, the low light played to my advantage - I really like grain and blur for evocative type images. Not to say that I planned this, because I didn't. I'm not methodical, but more reactive and intuitive and in the post-shooting " what can I find in this?" mode. And I find that fun. Great fun - full of discovery. I was a graphic designer for many years, so see? I even left room for the type on the right of the 'cover' idea!!! ;-) Wasnt thinking that way at all obviously, but perhaps it's meshed in my subconscious. ( I like negative space too. ) Every graphic designer dreams of doing album covers, instead of corporate annual reports............. perhaps I should send it to the Free Bridge Quintet, though it only features John !

Very nice, and I like the grain. Ken pointed me here after seeing mine in a similar vein:
