St. John's Cemetery is located on Main St. in Westminster, MD behind the Westminster branch of the Carroll County Public Library. It is home one of the most interesting statues of the Virgin Mary I have ever come across. She is standing in prayer while her bare foot tramples a serpent with a piece of (I assume) "Forbidden Fruit" in it's mouth. (view photo here: www.flickr.com/photos/bellatrix6/1259810742/in/set-721576... ) It looks like it was made in the Victorian era but it could be older as this cemetery was founded in the 1780's. I remember hearing "Black Aggie" type stories about this statue when I was a child growing up in Westminster, MD. I have been in this cemetery after dark and I have never seen "her eyes glow red" and I am more afraid of the bums that tend to sleep in this cemetery than I am of the statues.
Here are links to photos of the legendary MD "Black Aggie" (both of them) can be seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/patgavin/2321346592/
This "Black Aggie" was moved from it's original location because vandals were destroying the cemetery to find out if the legend is true: www.flickr.com/photos/carsick/242076768/
