This is the current wildfire on McCormick Ridge as of yesterday. It was visible when I crossed the Sonora Pass (US 108). Chatted awhile with a Forestry Services lady. It started on August 18th, from a lightning strike and has burned about 20 acres so far. No efforts to contain it are being made as it poses no threat to any human structures. Two fire crews just monitor it. These natural fires are ecologically critical to the cycle of life here, clearing undergrowth and opening up space for dormant and new seeds. If however, it had started by a human, she tells me that they must put it out, as it's too confusing to the public, we need a simple message, fire bad.
