Woodpeckers (in this case Dendrocopos major) have several favourite drumming posts in their breeding territories and regularly visit and use them in the pre-breeding period. It is a form of far-carrying communication and it is not rare that they use good resonating surfaces like the lamp close to our family cottage. The drumming echoed very loudly and far away. Clever beasts!
