seventies telephone

This was my family telephone when I was growing up. It's certainly taken quite a few phonecalls! I now look after it, it's very well loved.

My parents have also still got one like this, it was my grandmothers originally. They last well, clearly!

Funnily enough, I inherited their last phone when mine broke and it broke after just a couple of months. Modern gadgets, eh?

We had the boring old two-tone grey. How did you get a nicer one?

No idea!! Do you know how it used to work in the old days? Could you buy your phone or just have what BT gave you?

  7. Gellybean (63 months ago | reply)

I think the phone was the property of the Post Office. I don't think you could buy phones until BT was privatised.

Aw well, it must have just been luck that we got white then.
I seem to remember this phone has seen a lot of phoncalls from yourself over the years! ;D

This is splendid. We had one just like this when I was growing up too. Same colour, same label on the dial. Yours looks in mint condition. In these days of push button phones, you forget how long it used to take to dial a number with lots of 8s, 9s or zeros in it. Especially if you had to keep trying!

That is so true!! Whenever I use it, it really concentrates the mind on dialling. Bit annoying when you finally get through sometimes, that you realise you need a touch tone to be able to progress, but overall it's great.

I bought one just like it on the web, modified with a modern plug. Makes a super ring, audible all over the house! However, it's not much good for dealing with 'press 1 for a poke in the eye, press 2 for a thump on the nose' menus. Your selective close-up is very effective and the lighting is excellent.
