Chillon Castle Panorama

A panorama shot on the Montreux shoreline just outside of Chillon Castle. The castle is located on Lake Geneva with the Swiss Alps in the background.

The castle is the result of several centuries of building, adaptations, renovations and restorations. The whole thing is built on a rock patch at the edge of the lake which serves as natural protection. The oldest written document mentioning the castle is from 1150 which talks about how the House of Savoy already controlled the route along the shores of Lake Geneva. In 1803 the castle became the property of the Canton of Vaud when it was created (where Montreux is located). Restoration began at the end of the 19th Century and continues to this day.
