An incredibly rare and wonderful thermal displaying its inner plumbing.

From a certain angle and with a little imagination, this sort of looks like the classic Charlie Brown ghost from the Charlie Brown Halloween Special..

Colonnade Falls. We had been backpacking on the trail for four days at this point. The sky is overcast, but we are up before dawn. Mark says, "I'm surpised that Gary isn't down at the falls." That brought me to my senses. I grabbed my camera, filters and tripod and ran as best I could down the trail to get to the overlook.

Slip here! Slide there. Do NOT trip over the rocks. Face-planting would be bad. Negotiate the steep part. Around this corner, down that corner. Get to the overlook and set everything down. Get low. Watch the hand of the gods of Yellowstone unfold the mystery of the new day before my eyes.

Priceless.
