Hong Kong International Airport

Hong Kong International Airport

The new HKIA opened its doors in 1998 to replace the older airport which was originally built in 1925 in over crowded downtown Kowloon and with very little space for future expansion of the airport. The older airport was also considered demanding for pilots, due to its proximity to skyscrapers and mountains.

The History Channel program Most Extreme Airports ranked it as the 6th most dangerous airport in the world.

Had I known this as a child, I would have been all kinds of nervous the one time I remember landing at that airport.

The new airport was built mainly on reclaimed lands in the outer lying islands of Hong Kong. HKIA also operates one of the world's largest passenger terminal buildings (the largest when opened in 1998) and operates twenty-four hours a day.
