Old gaol Wentworth

The gaol at Wentworth operated from around 1870 to 1920 - the period when Wentworth's prominence as a river port meant it was a busy roistering town. The growth of the railways shifted populations and the gaol eventually closed for lack of prisoners. It's another of the simple, well-proportioned public buildings built of soft-coloured red brick that are so prevalent in western country towns. Though it's now beautiful, the cells are bleak and cold - even on a sunny autumn day.
