Dartford Tunnel Cycle Service bus

Dartford Tunnel Cycle Service bus by Tom Burnham.
This is one of the buses used by London Transport Country Area for transporting bikes through the Dartford Tunnel for the first couple of years after it opened - bike racks downstairs, seats upstairs. The service was free! It was also rarely used, so after a while they gave up using buses and just transported cyclists and the bikes in a Tunnel Police Landrover. Bus is seen at Dartford Garage.
More detailed examination of the original neg indicates that this is reg no 529FJJ, which I believe was TT4.

I recently purchased a photo that appears to be one of these in a scrap yard. I will get around to posting it on here or on The London Bus Scene on Google that I moderate on.

Sure I read of one that is being restored a few years ago, not heard anything more on it though. They were built on the Thames trader chassis.

Thanks - I vaguely recall hearing at the time that they'd been sold to a dealer, but don't know what happened to them afterwards.
The LT type letters were TT if I remember rightly (I should have an old Ian Allan ABC of London buses somewhere, but it would take a good deal of finding)

That is correct, they were classified as TT`s 1-5, the bodywork was by Strachan, they had space for 23 cycles in the mid section and a section at the rear for Tandems/Tricycles and 33 passengers all on the top deck.

I can remember going on a cycling trip from Hornchurch (Essex) to Sevenoaks (Kent) via the tunnel and travelling on these buses. I took some photos so I'll have to try and find them and scan them. I remember too that after the buses were withdrawn they had a bike trailer that one of the Land Rover Tunnel Police vehicles towed, but I didn't travel on one.

They were painted in LT`s green country area livery with a cream central band.

Remember the bus service for bikes. It was always parked and empty when I saw it.
