A road through the Wolds ....Dedicated to David Hockney

As ever it works best on Black try the L key if you have time

A road down to Kiplingcotes in the Yorkshire Wolds shot just after sunrise

I have dedicated this shot to English painter David Hockney in thanks for all his work over the last forty years. In particular for the work he has completed in the last four years, painting in oils , watercolour and I pad in the Yorkshire Wolds. Most of you will know that he was based for years in LA his swimming pool pictures were particularly well known. About five years ago for family reasons he came back to Yorkshire and based himself in Bridlington. Since then he has worked with amazing energy capturing the landscapes of the Wolds. He took his paint and easels outside even in mid winter to paint in natural light. The work in this period is stunning full of life and vitality
If you live in England you cannot have missed publicity about his major exhibition “A Bigger Picture” at the Royal academy in London. He has used all twelve rooms in the academy for the show so it’s a very large exhibition which is already a sell out I believe. The majority of the work in the exhibition is of his recent work in Yorkshire there are some examples of his earlier output including The Grand Canyon and Mulholland Drive.
Apart from the appreciation of his art what pleases me personally is that the latest works celebrates the countryside I know best. I have walked and travelled through the Wolds that stretch from the Humber to the coast North of Bridlington all my life. The area is not much visited and a little remote but I have always loved the quiet beauty of the Wolds now Mr Hockney has shown the world the magic of the place. (Just hope all the world does not descend on the East Riding , I rather like the quiet)

Oystercatcher

Oystercatcher

Many thanks to everyone who sent Birthday greetings much appreciated

This nesting Oystercatcher was taken at Vic in Iceland. It was a well behaved bird that sat calmly on her nest. They are not uncommon in Britain I have seen them many times but I have never managed a decent shot of one.

Setting out for another year

Setting out for another year

Well it’s my birthday tomorrow this seemed fairly appropriate as I head into the uncharted waters of being 58.

The sculpture is in the Belem district of Lisbon it’s called in English “ Monument to the discoveries” it was constructed in the 1960s to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator a Portuguese seafarer. The bridge in the background is the suspension bridge over the Tagus River.
I am heading off to the coast myself for a couple of days I never work on my birthday I will be back at the weekend older but no doubt no wiser

Horses on a frosty morning

Horses on a frosty morning

Worth a look in the light box

Last weekend I managed to find a gap in my too busy life and the winter weather to go for a decent walk and take a few shots. I saw these horses in the early morning sun just outside the village of Thixendale. I liked the way the frost laid half way across the field. A panoramic crop seemed to work best

Zabriskie Point..... Death Valley

Zabriskie Point..... Death Valley

View On Black

Taken in 1997 from a scanned photograph.
My memory of driving through Death Valley that August day is of mild anxiety. Yes it was hot, incredibly hot the temperature gauge on the car went off the scale I had images of breaking down. As you went into the National Park there were lots of dire notices as to what to do if this happened as I recall one of them was to lie under the car and use its shade. We did get out for a spell to take a few shots but it was like stepping into an oven, you could feel the heat hit your lungs. Some people live there, I do not know how they cope. My admiration grew for those brave pioneers who passed through Death Valley in horse drawn wagons they were tough folk indeed
