The drying of food is the world's oldest known preservation method, and dried fish has a storage life of several years. The method is cheap and effective in suitable climates; the work can be done by the fisherman and family, and the resulting product is easily transported to market.

Þorlákshöfn is a town on the southern coast of Iceland in the Municipality called Ölfus.Its main importance is as a port as it has the only viable harbour on Iceland's southern coastline between Grindavík in the west and Höfn in the east.

Heringsmöwen erreichen Körperlängen zwischen 51 und 64 Zentimeter. Das Gefieder ist weiß, die Flügel sind schiefergrau. Die Spitzen derselben sind etwas dunkler, der Schwanz ist dunkelgrau und weiß gestreift. Der kräftige gelbe Schnabel endet in einem spitzen Haken. Die Unterkieferspitze ist verbreitert und besitzt einen roten Punkt. Die Beine haben meist eine gelbe Färbung. Männchen und Weibchen unterscheiden sich nicht in der Gefiederfärbung.
