The Colorado State Capitol in Denver, Colorado , is the home of the Colorado legislature and the offices of the
Colorado Governor and Lt. Governor. The building is intentionally
reminiscent of the US Capitol, Washington.
Designed by Elijah E. Myers, it was constructed in the 1890s from
Colorado white granite. The distinctive gold dome consists of real 24
karat gold plate added in 1908, commemorating the Colorado Gold Rush.
The historic building sits slightly higher than the rest of downtown
Denver. The main entrance hall is open 180 feet to the top of the
dome, about the height of an 18-story building.
Additionally, the official elevation of Denver is measured outside the
west entrance to the building, The fifteenth step on the west entrance
is engraved with the words "Elevation: 5280 feet, One Mile High,
5-12-69".

Denver, gelegen am östlichen Fuß der Rocky Mountains, ist seit 1876
die Hauptstadt des US-Bundesstaates Colorado. Denver war ursprünglich
eine Goldgräbermetropole und hat heute 556.835 Einwohner. In der
Metropolregion Denver-Aurora wohnen 2.600.000 Einwohner.
Denver liegt genau eine Meile über dem Meeresspiegel (Markierung auf
der 15. Stufe an der Westseite des Capitols) und wird deshalb auch
"Mile High City" genannt.
Das Colorado State Capitol ist Regierungssitz. Das Gebäude wurde 1890 aus Colorados Granit
gebaut und dem US Capitol in Washington nachempfunden. Bekannt ist das
State Capitol für seine mit 24 Karat Blattgold aus Colorado's Minen
überzogene "Haube". Sie soll an die Tage des "Gold
rushs" erinnern.
Vom Balkon der Kuppel hat man einen aufgezeichneten Blick über die
Stadt bis in die Rocky Mountains hinein.
