Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a town in Middle Franconia (Germany, Bavaria)
On this photo you see the castle gate with the all commanding tower.
The castle was well protected from enemies, but not from the forces of
nature. The earthquake of 1356 destroyed the castle buildings and the
valley wall. Until today, no one knows exactly how the area has
looked. It would be necessary to start costly excavation works. What
remains is the castle gate from the 12th Century with the highest and
oldest tower of Rothenburg and the adjacent massive castle wall.
The gate in front of the tower and the two customhouses were only
added in the 16th Century. This extension is a good example that in
the Renaissance square buildings were combined with circular buildings
.

Hier seht ihr das Burgtor mit dem alles überragenden Turm von
Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Vor Feinden war die Burg gut geschützt,
jedoch nicht vor Naturgewalten. Das Erdbeben von 1356 zerstörte die
Burggebäude und die talseitige Mauer weitestgehend. Bis heute weiß
niemand, wie das Areal genau ausgesehen hat. Dazu wären aufwendige
Ausgrabungsarbeiten nötig. Geblieben ist das Burgtor aus dem 12.
Jahrhundert mit dem höchsten und ältesten Torturm Rothenburgs und der
angrenzenden massiven Burgmauer.
Das in Richtung Burggarten dem Burgturm vorgelagerte Tor und die
beiden seitlichen Zollhäuschen wurden erst im 16. Jahrhundert
angefügt. Diese Erweiterung ist ein schönes Beispiel dafür, dass in
der Renaissance Rechteckbauten mit Rundbauten kombiniert wurden.
