Latifa Echakhch

Using a variety of media, including installation, sculpture and video, Latifa Echakhch’s political yet poetic body of work is informed by her personal history and her experience of European and North American post-war art. The artist employs everyday objects and materials, deconstructing them to reveal their underlying codes. Echakhch’s works revolve around questions of cultural identity and the place of the individual in the face of history, memory, politics and religion. Her use of ordinary objects is a device employed to alert viewers of the ways in which we uncritically accept symbols and stereotypes, and, in doing so, she questions notions of globalisation, national symbols, and the aesthetic and cultural differences between countries.
