66 BELOW ZERO !
Pretty nipply morning !! This is the temperature at my cabin in Tok,
Alaska at 9 AM this morning. I had to spend the night there last
night ... It was too dangerous to keep driving on to Whitehorse.
Tok's official low temperature this morning was -71 degrees
fahrenheit ... the coldest temperature recorded up here in the last 19
years! I remember the last time we cracked seventy below ... minus
75, back in February of 1989.
Good thing there was no wind!
That little cabin in the background woods is my excellent log cabin
sauna, but I thought it was slightly too cool for a steambath !
It's Beautiful ... I Love It !!!

Eh, that's really pretty cold, if I did the units conversion right. I though that I've seen some serious cold, living in Finland, but I think the coldest weather I've experienced myself is something like -31 F, which is quite a bit warmer.
Around here, it's been a pretty weird winter; the coldest weather so far has been something like 19 F and we haven't got a permanent snow cover yet, even though it's already February. I don't ever remember seeing such weather at this time of year; it's almost like it would still be November or spring already. Some birds have skipped their migration or are already coming back.

Perfect!! Love it! I have an idea brewing in the back of my mind that I'd love to live in such a cabin in the Yukon wilderness somewhere remote for 1 year to fully appreciate the place throughout the seasons. I went to the Yukon for the first time in the fall of 2006... the first of many trips I suspect.

It's almost un-imaginable. I would think that -25 F would probably feel just as cold to me as -71 F...It's all way too freaking cold for me.
And how in the heck would you even begin to make steam in -71 temps?!?!
Gestur Pálsson (52 months ago | reply)
Brr, man thats cold. And we have been complaining about -15 to -20° C over here. Sounds like the tropics compared to this :)

Lots of record cold being set up here in the north... is the earth trying to heal herself? Dave do you know much about the Gaia hypothesis? It would seem to be right up your alley!

That -70 (F) temperature made the news all over Anchorage (it was the lead weather story on channel 2 news). It's just been cold ALL OVER this winter.
Pilot Point, on the Alaska Peninsula coast in SW Alaska registered a reading of -22 night before last and Dillingham was -34.
Yeow!
