The old Point Reyes lighthouse is about 1 hr north of San Francisco, near the epicenter of the big 1906 earthquake that almost completely destroyed San Francisco (during that earthquake, the lighthouse moved ~18 feet north, more than the widening of the Japanese main island caused by the recent earthquake). Point Reyes is the windiest place on the Pacific Coast and the second foggiest place (especially in summertime) on the North American continent.
