Memories of an Empire

Memories of an Empire

For the first time in 20 years, I went home for Christmas to a warmer place. And Rome did not disappoint. It was one of the warmest Christmases in years. On the minus side, it was a short trip and did not have much time outside of family obligations. Only one afternoon did I go out with my brother-in-law to take a walk around ancient Rome first, and along one of the beaches to the north of the city. This is obviously a view of the Roman forum taken for the stairs coming down from the Campidoglio.

Corner

Corner

Last week I went back to San Francisco for the first time since I moved to Ottawa. It was a little bit strange to be back there and think that that was not home anymore. It was nice to see old places and friends, but I was not prepared for the cold!! It seems that it has been unusually cold there, and it has been unusually warm in Ottawa. Go figure…

This is the Phelan building on Market, one of the historic buildings in the city by the bay.

Out of gasoline

Out of gasoline

I recently went back to Shreveport, Louisiana, my introduction to the USA more than 20 years ago, to spend the Thanksgiving with my wife’s family. On our way to the house were we fried the turkey I spotted this recently abandoned gas station.

Lest we forget

Lest we forget

The Ottawa memorial by the Rideau River. As described in the plaque on the wall: “The Memorial, unveiled by Queen Elisabeth II in 1959, commemorates by name some 800 men and women who lost their lives while serving or training with the Commonwealth Air Forces in Canada, the West Indies and the United States, and who have no known grave”.
