Yoga mats

New Preston, Connecticut. Anne and I were getting ready to leave after a great yoga class this morning and our "his and hers" yoga mats were crying out to be photographed. His is the orange one, more tightly wound (like him) and hers is the yellow one, looser and more optimistic. they do best leaning on each other lest they both go flat.

I would love to be able to peer over your shoulder & take notes while you go photo-ing for a week (yes, an entire week!). This is great. I am thinking seriously about purchasing this type of lens. Could you let me know exactly what it is....I have the CanonRebel.

I'm delighted you all like this image, taking it made me smile, writing the caption made me smile more, reading rdng tchr's comment made me smile more. :)

Kay, the lens is nice but you can do this with many different types of lenses, it's more of a general technique called "shallow depth of field" and having a fast lens helps as does understanding how far to be from the subject and how far the subject is from what's behind it. You're welcome to come up but Connecticut winters are a bit rougher than Texas.

Lovely photo and text! it's so nice that you "analyze" your characters in the way you roll your yoga mats. Wait, maybe it's a scientific breakthrough!!! :-)

    16. JonnyMoss (52 months ago | reply)

Super shot Richard - it just seems to "work" very well and tells a nice story - perhaps you could do a series of shots like this, with his and hers?

They are there like soul mates! Great pic, Richard.

wow! I think this might be the defintive photograph for two yoga mats.
I love the colors and the dof glow effect.
      awesome work!

    22. Richard- (52 months ago | reply)

Hey, thank you all for your kind comments about this fun picture.

Lenny: the glow isn't bokeh per se, it's window reflection on the wooden floor in blur. Just happened to line up nicely with the mats.

roddh: uh oh, I get nervous with words like "definitive." ;)

I dunno, you guys seem to go around in circles.
But I definitely see a heart formed between you (between the light on the top and the lack of reflection on the bottom.)
      great shot

Thanks you all for your kind comments on this shot. I encourage everyone to take more pictures of everyday things, there is beauty in everything and it's our challenge to bring it out and share it.

Ari: wow, I missed that. The feeling is there though. Thanks mate.

MACanon: yes, this lens is a fascinating tool and the transition areas of focus are where it shines.

Karen: We have the brightest yoga mats in class. Not sure how that happened, my wife, who ordered them, has fits of color now and then.

Something so "everyday" turned into a picturesque piece of art....Kudo's

How did you diffuse the lighting behind the mats btw - what type of filter did you use?

    40. Richard- (50 months ago | reply)

22: I didn't diffuse the light, there is a window on the back wall that sent a light reflection onto the floor. I set the shot up to make use of it behind the mats. I might have had a UV filter on when I took this or no filter at all, can't remember. Thanks.
