I let this one get out of sequence.

Cover design for zijeme by Ladislav Sutnar 1931, one of the great graphic design pioneers of the twentieth century. All contemporary designers should be familiar with his work.

More of the photomonage in graphic design.

The play between photo and graphic is spot on.

He was certainly a 20thC master of the craft.

      Dear Flickr friends:
I am at a loss as what to say about information on books regarding the study of photography in graphic design. I have read and used the information on so much material over the many years that I worked and taught as a graphic designer that I can't even remember what some of them were. So much information came from so many sources plus my own concepts and vision that developed during the time that I spent in the field of graphic design.

What information is desired? The history or use or philosophy of photography in graphic design? It's an enormous topic. I'll think about it and perhaps I will come up with a few recommendations, but it's such an extensive subject and I don't know if I have any specific, special answers.

One thing may help. Start researching designers and their concepts and that's not too difficult today on the internet and your local public library. The only problem is that the subject is vast! (I haven't even started on U.S. graphics.) You could research individual designers such as Ladislav Sutnar, El Lissitzky, Piet Zwart, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Man Ray, Herbert Bayer, Herbert Matter, John Heartfield, the list is infinite. Or with the various movements such as contemporary Swiss design, constructivism in graphic design, the photomontage, the Bauhaus, DaDa. (And that's only a few of the movements.)

So far, I have covered European work from the 1900's to WWII but nothing much beyond that. (Our graphic design history or roots.) There is an enormous range of photography in graphic design that came after WWII.
