I just love how you can be in a slump one day and the very next strike gold. I not saying the shot is gold, I'm more referring to how quickly the idea popped into my head. It was like I didn't even have to try! We were talking about trashy people and all the sudden a Hooker approaching a John popped into my mind. Its sometimes hard to convince a model or a friend to make themselves look less then attractive and desirable. Most people come to me to make either there products or themselves look beautiful! Joyce is great when it comes to the gory, nasty or morally questionable subject matter Hell, half the time its her idea! I know her mother is probably shaking her head in disappointment right about now. Barb… its all in good fun and for the sake of art!
So how did I pull it off? I know a lot of you are wondering that. So… I'll break it down for you. First order of business was finding a suitable foreground location. Ravenswood Community center has been going though major renovations which include knocking down the whole building ( a bit extreme for "renovations" if you ask me. which the city obviously didn't hence the lack of a building!) The parking lot is empty and perfectly suited for this kind of behavior. It also makes for a great place for a photo shoot.
The rain had let up an hour before shooting so there was going to be water on the ground. I wanted this as I knew it would make for more atmosphere. We hopped in the Jeep and make are way half way to the destination before realizing that even though Joyce may be damn near 6'2" in heals, She isn't tall enough to lean over a jeep and stick her ass out. I meant to drive the car but totally forgot. No problem, I thought. "ring, ring, ring… hi mom! would you mind driving the car up and acting as the John in the shot? you will… great!" She brings the car up just as I'm finishing setting up the beauty Dish.
I decided to emulate a giant overhead street light and boom the beauty dish up to teetering heights. Of course the Cyber Commander Light controller was hooked up so I didn't need to lower the boom to adjust the light. Joyce walked into place, leaned over the car and followed my instruction to arch her back and stick her ass out towards the camera. A few times I had to walk over and adjust her dress down so her "ya you know what" wasn't all "Hey everybody!!" (ok… she had shorts on underneath) I noticed that although the light on Joyce was perfect, the front of the car fell off into blackness. Simple solution… AB800 with Med Softbox aimed at front of car. We were now perfect and ready for the real deal. With unlit cigarette in hand, Joyce did her best prostitute pose as I snapped shot after shot, yelling out only when her ass failed to pop. periodically my mother would crack a joke or two about either Joyce's performance or how her dress was perfect for this shoot. It's the dress she wore out for my birthday. We all thought it looked great that night. I didn't think that it would double as street walker getup, but you gotta love coincidences!
Half way through, a car pulls up with flashing headlights. For a split second I thought, "oh shit, here we go!" but as the car drew closer it was revealed to be nothing more than a dumb ass… amazing and comically timed brother Shawn. He lent absolutely nothing to the shoot. He just sat in his car and watched Joyce strut her stuff.
The whole shoot took no more than 30 minutes. Before we knew it we were off to Walmart for more amazingly tasty vegetable snacks. This time it was sugar snap peas and radishes.
Post Production took this shot to the next level. I had wanted to amplify the grittiness of the shot and what better way then to add a nasty loading dock in the back of a warehouse. I had taken the background shot last year while scouting for an exotic car photo shoot. I never got to use this location and figured what better way to recycle then to compliment a prostitute with familiar location for her to conduct her business.
Again, I dodged and burned, changed the color of the car from burgundy to burnt orange, lit the cigarette and selectively darkened sections of the photo. a little selective sharpening and I was done! sounds really easy when I put it like that!
Interesting fact… the background shot was taken at 2pm in broad daylight. A little raw magic and you get a night shot! oh how I love digital photography!
So I feel it necessary to let every one know that I was awarded a job today that will get me international print publication. I have been contracted to shoot 8 heavily stylized (my style) images to be used in 7 single and multi page magazine advertisements. I'm pretty stocked about it since I'm being given pretty good creative control. I will be casting heavily tattooed attractive woman to model and contrast the products. Look out for more on this. I will most likely be doing a series of videos following this process.
Ok, I've said all I set out to say, maybe a bit more. I'm off to perhaps relax and watch a movie before heading off to my second favorite place outside of the bathroom… dream land!
