Boston Skyline @ 4:45am

With the ducks that kept me company.

Lessons learned on my first attempt at night photography:

1- The ball head for my tripod sucks!! Once I would get it where I wanted it and tighten it, the whole thing would shift no matter what I did. So I had to overshoot where I wanted to capture and hope it fell into the correct position (or close enough!)

2 - Bring a small flashlight! (Duh!! So you cen see what the heck you are doing!!)

3 - Gloves would have been nice.

4 - (Another Duh!) Makes sure your battery is well charged, or at least bring along the spare!

I wasn't thinking when I left the house. I just figured that if I had to get up and the crack of dawn (or really before) and drive to and from the airport, I should take advantage of the situation.

At least now I know a great spot to go to try again, but I don't know if the ducks will be there. :)

Bring gloves. Probably a definite. Radio Shack has good prices on tripods. Still a neat shot, and the ducks are a great addition. I imagine they wondered what on earth??????????

      1. largest drawback of my camera (prosumerish but no SLR) - longest exposure is 4", otherwise Bulb mode which must be held.

      2. your shot is great. certainly for somebody as ill equipped as you were.

      3. yet, the lack of sharpness in those big buildings bothers me. have you tried artificial sharpening?

      4. next time with gloves flashlight and batteries it will be perfect.

LOL, I know exactly what you mean! And even if it´s not the ballhead then it´s the hit on the shutterbutton that makes something stupid (I want a remote control ;)

Despite all that - it´s so beautiful and was worth the effort for sure!

Beautiful dreamy mood, and I love the monochromatic colour. I love Boston! I think this is the first skyline pic I've seen of it.

have you tries using the timer to counteract the movement of the ball head? You can set of the shot. then turn on the timer and hit the shutter button--by the time the shutter opens the camera should be perfectly still again.

Actually, I only found out the name last time I was out there. It is Lopresti Park in East Boston. Found it while tooling around after leaving the airport.

Excellent shot. Ducks can be good company. Was that the actual color, or did you sepia it?

    41. StarrGazr (75 months ago | reply)

These are the actual colours. I did no post processing except using Unsharp Mask and a slight crop. Thanks everyone for all the great comments. This is definitely one of my favourite photos.

Very Cool Shot starrGazr. I think we both shot from the same spot. I think you shot at low tide. IMG_0718 I give you a lot of credit getting out in the morning. I can't seem to drag myself out of bed for sunrises.
